"VARIETY IN OIL"
JULY 2008
FEATURING
CHESTER ENSIGN, JR.
From July 1 to July 29, 2008 the Exchange Street Gallery will hold a one-man presentation entitled Variety in Oil of paintings by Pinehurst Artist Chester O. Ensign, Jr. A reception, open to the public, will be held on Saturday, July 5, 2008 from 2:00 until 4:00 pm.
Ensign, a post-grad Geologist from UNC, Chapel Hill, enjoyed a successful career in Mineral Exploration and Mining, taking early retirement at age 60 to pursue other interests including art.
While in undergraduate school, Ensign took courses in Architectural and Mechanical Drawing which provided an excellent background for understanding perspective.
In early 2004, Ensign observed an oil painting class in Fort Myers, Florida where he and his wife resided at the time. He became so fascinated that he promptly found an excellent art teacher under whom he studied until moving to Pinehurst in early 2006. While in Fort Myers he took additional classes under two other well-known local artists. He has also studied under Frank Covino, a master Italian renaissance painter. Ensign says, “Since moving to Pinehurst and joining the Artists League, my interest in oil painting has moved to an even higher level, if that is possible. I try to paint or practice painting several hours every day in pursuit of continuous improvement. I also continue to study art books and take workshops as frequently as possible. I prefer realistic painting to other styles.”
