Have you ever wondered what Yupo is? Or have you tried to use it with watercolor but been unsuccessful? Yupo is plastic and can be used with watercolor, not just alcohol ink. All it takes is some patience, a sense of humor, and some knowledge or practice. This class will prepare you for working in watercolor on your own with Yupo. You will make at least two paintings in different styles. The class includes samples, demonstration, practice, and critique.
Mud, Cauliflower and Edging

It's not gardening, it's learning how to control your watercolors! Have you ever wondered how to keep your watercolors from wandering all over the page? How about avoiding the watermarks known as cauliflowers, and hard-edged brush strokes? Want to achieve smooth washes and clear details? In this half-day class we will discuss the ins and outs of watercolor control. The class is suitable for all levels of student, from total beginners to people who have been using watercolor for a while but still have some technique questions.
Watercolor Landscape Techniques

No experience necessary. You will complete your own beautiful watercolor painting while learning a variety of techniques in blending primary colors, mixing colors, how to shade lights, mediums, and darks of the value system, how to capture vital patterns, and how to use brush strokes to achieve a painting of which you will be proud. The instructor will provide a landscape that all will be completing from start to finish. Students may take either or both classes.
Note: A different landscape will be completed during the April 23rd class.
Watercolor Free and Loose

Using both wet into wet and dry brush we will explore the beauty of transparent watercolor, working from your own photos. Irene works on 140# paper, usually Arches. Bring your favorite brushes and colors. Irene does a lot of mixing of her own colors, so as long as you have the basic primary colors, you can mix any color.

Intermediate Chinese Brush Painting: The Peony, "The Queen of the Flowers"

The Peony is the national Flower of China and symbolizes prosperity and nobility. It also symbolizes "the beauty of a woman."
The class will cover loading the color on the brush, painting the flower in various positions, the buds, leaves, and stems, creating your own composition and adding bees or butterflies. Handout exercises and paper will be supplied.
