As a 12 year old caddie in Connecticut, Frank
Giordano fell in love with golf during the magical moments he
witnessed Julius Boros demonstrating his sand play techniques. And
though teaching English literature at the university level
eventually became his adult vocation, his romantic liaison with golf
led him into a decades-long avocation as a freelance golf writer.
Giordano's "moonlighting" to fund his children's college pursuits
included stints as a ghost-writer for several teaching professionals
including Hank Haney, as well as writing a history of one of
America's most prestigious golf clubs and producing golf course
reviews for several regional and national magazines.
Since retiring from the University of Houston, once dubbed the
Harvard of golf because of its tradition of winning NCAA
championships, Giordano has turned to art and, naturally, paintings
of golf courses.
During the month of July, several of Giordano's golf paintings will
be featured among the works on display at the Artists League of the
Sandhills in Aberdeen His one man show, "On the Road Again,"
presents paintings in various media depicting people and places
Giordano has encountered in his travels and imaginings. A
reception, open to the public, will be held on July 11, from 3 until
5 p.m. at the League’s Exchange Street Gallery, 129 Exchange Street.
The exhibit, opening July 2, runs through July 29.
The
photo at left shows his treatment of the par 3 second hole of
Bandon Trails in Oregon. That splendid layout was an early design
of the talented team of Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, the men who are
reworking Pinehurst Country Club's famed #2 course for the men's and
women's US Opens in 2014.

AUGUST
"Jewels in the Sandhills"
Exhibit of small works and fine art miniatures by the membership
Diane Kraudelt, "Pear Trio", 7" x 5"
In August the Exchange Street Gallery will present a small works
and fine art miniatures exhibit of art work measuring eight by ten
inches or less. Last year was our first exhibition of this genre
and we exhibited 73 pieces of art work by our Full and Associate
members.
The genre of fine art in miniature is a focus of several art
societies or art organizations worldwide and as an art form dates
from the 1300's with the zenith of popularity in the 1700's. These
fine art miniatures and small paintings are usually extremely
detailed and are meant to draw the viewer in as opposed to the
viewer standing back at a distance to appreciate the work.
